I can't tell you how gratifying it has been to work on this record with one of West Africa's rising stars. Yes, Vieux Farka Touré is the son of the beloved and legendary, Ali Farka Touré but in his young career, he has already begun to carve out his own place on the global stage. With his Six Degrees debut, Fondo (the Road), I think he steps confidently into the international spotlight fully in his own right, with an album that puts his guitar skills front & center and features everything from gorgeously haunting African blues to scorching rockers and African Reggae.

In order to help bring this project to fruition, we enlisted the production assistance of Ex-Centric Sound System's Yossi Fine the talented Israeli bass player and producer, who we have worked with on records by Jef Stott, Karsh Kale and others. Yossi has played with everyone from David Bowie to Deepak Chopra and I was quite happy when he re-located both his family and his recording studio to Northern California, allowing us to work more closely.

Yossi traveled to Vieux's home town of Bamako in Mali to record the basic tracks for Fondo and then Vieux flew out to the Bay Area to finish the record at Yossi's studio. Along the way, it has been a tremendous pleasure getting to know Vieux and to watch first hand as he develops into a world class artist and a uniquely skilled guitar player with a sound all his own.
